Self-Guided Learning in Pleasant Hill

What Is a Self-Guided Learning™ Course?

Self-Guided Learning™ is an American Heart Association-approved learning approach that combines two components:

  1. Self-paced online cognitive learning — completed independently on any compatible device, anytime
  2. A self-guided skills session — completed in person at a CPR Verification Station™ learning center

Learners complete both components on their own schedule. Upon successful completion, they receive an American Heart Association Course Completion eCard for BLS, ACLS, or PALS. This eCard meets employer and regulatory requirements at hospitals, clinics, dental offices, and healthcare facilities across California and nationwide.

This approach differs from traditional classroom training and blended learning, where a scheduled instructor leads the skills session. With Self-Guided Learning, no instructor is present during the skills session. The CPR Verification Station™ learning center handles skills evaluation independently using advanced simulation technology.

How the Online Learning Activity Works

The cognitive portion of every Self-Guided Learning course runs on True Adaptive™ learning powered by Area9 Lyceum. This technology continuously assesses each learner’s knowledge and confidence, then adjusts the content path in real time.

Here’s what that means practically:

  • Experienced providers skip content they already know
  • Newer learners receive targeted feedback and remediation on knowledge gaps
  • Every learner follows a personalized learning pathway focused on mastery, not time spent

The online learning activity is accessible on desktop, laptop, or tablet. Learners can pause, resume, and review content at any point. Most students complete the BLS online component in one to two hours, and ACLS or PALS in two to three hours.

Completing the online learning activity alone does not result in an AHA Course Completion eCard. The in-person skills session must also be successfully completed.

How the Skills Session Works at a CPR Verification Station™ Learning Center

After finishing the online learning activity, learners visit the CPR Verification Station™ learning center at Safety Training Seminars in Pleasant Hill to complete their hands-on skills session.

During this visit, learners independently perform required psychomotor skills—compressions, ventilations, and two-rescuer CPR sequences. The station provides:

  • Real-time, audiovisual performance feedback on compression depth, rate, recoil, and ventilation volume
  • Objective measurement of CPR skills against AHA-defined criteria
  • Repeated practice as needed until a passing score is achieved

There is no live instructor coaching or facilitation. Every learner is evaluated against the same objective standard, which removes variability and ensures consistent results. The skills session typically takes 30 minutes for BLS, ACLS, and PALS courses.

Who Benefits Most from This Training Format

Self-Guided Learning courses serve healthcare professionals across the Pleasant Hill area and Contra Costa County, including:

  • Staff at John Muir Medical Center, Walnut Creek (1601 Ygnacio Valley Road)—the only trauma center for Contra Costa County
  • Providers at Contra Costa Regional Medical Center in Martinez (2500 Alhambra Avenue)
  • Nurses and clinicians at Kaiser Permanente Walnut Creek Medical Center
  • Healthcare students at Diablo Valley College and surrounding programs
  • Prehospital service providers managing rotating shifts with unpredictable schedules

The format removes the single biggest obstacle to timely training: fixed classroom schedules. Providers near Sunvalley Shopping Center in Concord, staff commuting along Highway 4, or clinicians finishing overnight shifts can complete their online learning at home, then stop by the Gregory Lane office during one of the available time slots.

Safety Training Seminars Pleasant Hill operates Monday through Sunday, 8 AM to 10 PM. Phone: (925) 465-2494.
